Rob Roy Way

79 miles, 127 km (or 92 miles - 148 km), 7 days

Rob Roy MacGregor, an outlaw in the 17th and 18th century, the Scottish Robin Hood, has given his name to this trail in central Scotland.

He lived in these surroundings. And some local entrepreneurs started a trail and labeled it after this Scotch hero. The trail is not waymarked, but well described in guidebooks and on the web.

Apart from the association with a hero, we will be attracted to this particular trail by the highland scenery it runs through. From Drymen, past Loch Lomond, it follows the valleys up to Pitlochry. Geologically spoken, the trail is on the Highland Boundary Fault, where the highlands meet the lowlands. From the trail you will have fine views over the many long lochs in this exposed country, and visit some interesting Scottish villages. No monsters in these lochs, but in every other respect this trail can easily compete with the Great Glenn Way, and is more quiet too. The once boring Forrestry Commision plantations have reached maturity by now, and the Commission itself changed strategy, so that's no excuse to stay away any more.
